Diesel Fuel

They came to play in Philadelphia yesterday, that is the one thing that stands out after a second look. It wasn’t just the players; the coaches did their homework this past week, and it was evident by how they handled the Eagles.

Offensively, it appears they made a commitment to run the football, something they had not done competently until yesterday. Kyle Shanahan or whoever seemed to be in a nice rythm with the play calling, at least through the first half.n However, an annoying trend is starting and that is this offense does not no how to close. This is a yes, no, maybe unit. They will get the job done sometimes, but I don’t see them becoming a dominant group this year. It really starts with the guy, who handles the ball all the time.

Say what you want about whether Haynesworth has earned his paycheck so far this season, but, there’s a guy yesterday that will definitely need rear view mirrors to pick his up this week. The sad part is he never set foot on the field in St. Louis.  He was on the sidelines, monitoring the debacle. I’m hard pressed to believe that Mike Shanahan is not accountable for how the B and G played against St. Louis. When a team is dispirited and loses energy, particularly to a team, they were superior over, it reflects poorly on the person charged with their preparation.

I’ll spotlight the Washington/ Houston game in just a second, but before I get to that let’s get an arial view of some other teams in the NFL. The season is still in it’s infancy, but there are teams that may be sinking and teams that may be rising, and if I may steal a lyric from the late Waylon Jennings, “I don’t think Hank done it that way”.

Game two in the NFL is upon us already, not to mention the Maryland deer bow season. As quickly as the everything seems to be moving, I think I’ll head to the garage and grab my snow shovel, by the time I get there and get outside; there’ll be something waiting for me.

I haven’t checked the weather report, but I’ve got a hunch it’s going to be a fair weekend weather-wise. Therefore, I’ll have to figure out, what I will do tomorrow. As of now there are two options, take Badger (my Cesky Foucek dog) fishing on the Potomac (he doesn’t fish, but sure enjoys chasing the fish away for me) or take Badger out to a  local farm and let him hunt. Now he doesn’t know it, but I’d be surprised if we bumped into any upland or forest birds that would make the hair stand up on the back of his neck.

I think we’re all suckers for the pitchman; I know I can be, and Sunday night was a fine example of what I’m referencing. Instead of looking at what the boys in Vegas were saying (Dallas -3), I had to use a long-tom on the out come, because we were talking about Dallas. Dallas, the team that has the new stadium, where the Super Bowl will be played. Dallas, the team that has all that talent. Dallas, the team that has those powder blue uniforms and the helmet with the star.

Before we welcome in the Bruce Allen era, let's take one last look at the dung Vinny left, that's being swept under the rug. I have some questions.

Is Vinny getting paid? They wanted Zorn to resign so badly, they hired Sherm Lewis to humiliate him so they wouldn't have to pay Zorn. Now here comes Vinny with three games left in the season, and resigns. Why would he do that before the season's out? Does that mean it was voluntary on his part? Which means he left a bunch of money sitting on the table? Why would he do that when he's saying this team is in great shape? Why do you walk away from a job that's not completed yet and according to you, not your fault it's in a no-play-off situation? Is Vinny a quitter? Then you find out that supposedly VC is sticking around as an advisor, and he's still a friend. Does that mean he still gets to sit in the owner's box? Or has he been booted out of there? Is this effective immediately, pack your bags, get out of here?

First conceived in 1983 when John Riggins liked to wear camouflage in between games. After being dubbed Riggo's Rangers, John decided to create a line of merchandise to sell to fans and donate half the proceeds to veteran charities.

Today, with active conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, the needs of our men and women in uniform have become more acute and the collateral damage will be ongoing for years to come.  In honor of their service, John is re-launching Riggo's Rangers in hopes of raising money to donate to the best charities reaching out to take care of our troops and their families.  Each time you wear Riggo’s Rangers merchandise you show your support for the troops.

"Once, on any given Sunday in autumn, I was a warrior and a hero to a grateful nation.  But I knew who the real heroes were.  Like me, they were professionals who never scheduled the game. Unfortunately, many of the folks who sent them into action have the habit of forgetting.

I humbly ask you to give aid to the bedrock of our country --- our service men and women --- many of whom are making sacrifices beyond our imaginations."

--- John Riggins
